Private Cloud Architecture

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF)

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) delivers a unified, software-defined private cloud platform by integrating compute (vSphere), storage (vSAN), networking and security (NSX), and cloud operations into a single automated architecture. MRIT designs, deploys, and operates enterprise VCF platforms to replace fragmented virtualization silos with an agile, cloud-operating model on-premises.

What we do

  • Greenfield Architecture & SDDC Bringup

End-to-end design, sizing, and automated bringup via Cloud Builder, establishing resilient management and workload domains across physical spine-leaf fabrics.

  • Legacy vSphere Consolidation

Strategic workload migration and consolidation pathways to bring fragmented vSphere estates, legacy SANs, and standalone clusters under unified VCF governance.

  • Full-Stack Lifecycle Automation

Automated lifecycle management and non-disruptive upgrades across ESXi, vCenter, NSX, and vSAN using SDDC Manager with strict configuration drift enforcement.

  • Microsegmentation & Zero-Trust Fabrics

Native integration of NSX overlay networking, distributed firewalls, and Tier-0/Tier-1 gateways to enforce zero-trust security zones without perimeter bottlenecks.

  • High Availability & Stretched Clusters

Multi-availability-zone architectures, vSAN stretched clusters, and automated disaster recovery orchestration designed for sub-minute recovery time objectives.

  • Self-Service & Cloud Operations

Integration with VMware Aria / VCF Operations for capacity forecasting, cost governance, and automated infrastructure-as-code self-service provisioning.

  • VCF Operations & Unified Fleet Management

Federated control and single-pane observability across distributed VCF instances, standardizing multi-site capacity planning, operational health, and license pooling under a unified management plane.

  • VCF 9 Migration & In-Place Modernization

Structured upgrade workflows from legacy VCF 4.x/5.x and standalone vSphere estates to VCF 9, utilizing automated pre-checks and staged transitions with zero workload interruption.

  • Declarative Fleet Automation & Policy Enforcement

Fleet-wide configuration governance enforcing compliance, microsegmentation policies, and non-disruptive rolling maintenance across heterogeneous hardware clusters.

Common questions

How does VCF differ from running standard standalone vSphere and vCenter?

Standard vSphere requires manual sizing, bespoke SAN/NAS zoning, and separate operational tools for each tier. VCF delivers an automated, software-defined platform that binds compute, storage (vSAN), and networking (NSX) into standardized Workload Domains. SDDC Manager orchestrates deployment, configuration drift enforcement, and lifecycle upgrades as a unified system rather than disjointed components.

Can we bring existing hardware and vSphere clusters into VCF, or does it require greenfield hardware?

Both approaches are viable depending on architecture goals. Greenfield deployments using Cloud Builder deliver maximum standardization on validated Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) nodes. However, existing vSphere environments can be transitioned by standing up a dedicated VCF Management Domain and systematically migrating workloads or importing qualified clusters into dedicated Workload Domains without business downtime.

What network prerequisites must be met before deploying VCF?

VCF requires an enterprise spine-leaf fabric supporting jumbo frames (minimum 1600 MTU, recommended 9000 MTU) end-to-end to accommodate NSX Geneve encapsulation. Additionally, out-of-band management VLANs, BGP dynamic routing endpoints for Tier-0 gateways, and consistent Layer-2 trunking across top-of-rack (ToR) switches must be validated before SDDC Bringup.

How does VCF handle non-disruptive upgrades and lifecycle management?

SDDC Manager automates bundle downloads, pre-checks, and staged rollouts across the complete stack—including ESXi, vCenter Server, NSX managers, and edge clusters. Workloads are dynamically migrated across hosts via vMotion during maintenance windows, preventing downtime and eliminating configuration drift between individual hosts.

We are re-evaluating our private cloud licensing. How does MRIT help optimize VCF costs?

MRIT performs comprehensive estate audits to calculate exact core-count licensing requirements, eliminate idle compute allocations, and identify consolidation opportunities. We align your workload profile with appropriate workload domain tiers, ensuring you only license the capacity and features your enterprise architecture actively requires.

Can we run containerized workloads and modern apps directly on VCF?

Yes. VCF includes native integration with VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG). By activating Workload Management on your VCF Workload Domains, your teams can provision and manage enterprise Kubernetes clusters side-by-side with traditional virtual machines using native vCenter tooling and NSX network automation.

How does VCF 9 change multi-site and multi-instance infrastructure management?

VCF 9 shifts the operational model toward Unified Fleet Management, integrating Aria Operations natively into VCF Operations. Instead of managing independent SDDC Manager silos per site, infrastructure teams gain centralized visibility, aggregated resource analytics, and unified multi-site provisioning policies across global private cloud footprints.

Can our existing VCF 5.x or standalone vSphere 8 environments upgrade directly to VCF 9?

Yes, but transition pathways depend on your current architecture. Standalone vSphere clusters require an estate audit to validate storage policy baselines, hardware compatibility, and network fabric prerequisites before onboarding. For existing VCF 5.x deployments, MRIT designs phased upgrade pipelines that validate SDDC Manager bundles and host prerequisites before executing automated, workload-safe rollouts.

What storage improvements does VCF 9 introduce for vSAN?

VCF 9 standardizes storage architectures on the vSAN Express Storage Architecture (ESA), delivering optimized performance for high-density NVMe drives, native snapshots with zero performance degradation, and automated RAID-5/6 erasure coding efficiency without compromising write performance.

How does VCF Fleet Management enforce security and compliance standards?

Fleet management utilizes declarative policy baselines across management and workload domains. When configuration drift occurs—whether at the ESXi host profile level, NSX distributed firewall rules, or virtual switch configurations—the management plane flags deviations and automates policy re-synchronization to maintain audit compliance.
